Identifying the Western Black Widow
The western black widow (Latrodectus hesperus) is the species present throughout the East Valley. Females are the medically significant sex—males are smaller, less venomous, and rarely encountered. The female western black widow is jet black with a distinctive red hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen. Body length is roughly half an inch, with leg span reaching up to one and a half inches. The web is irregular and three-dimensional—not the organized circular web associated with orb weavers—and is built low to the ground or in sheltered corners.
Juvenile black widows and males are patterned with white, yellow, and orange markings and are frequently misidentified as different species entirely.
Where Black Widows Are Found in East Valley Homes
Black widows prefer sheltered, undisturbed spaces where they are unlikely to be disturbed and where prey insects are available. In and around East Valley homes, the most common locations include:

What the Real Risks Are
Black widow venom is a neurotoxin—it affects the nervous system rather than causing the localized tissue damage associated with brown recluse bites. Symptoms of a black widow bite can include immediate sharp pain at the bite site; muscle cramps and spasms that spread from the bite location; abdominal rigidity; sweating; nausea; and elevated blood pressure. Symptoms can develop over several hours following the bite.
Severe reactions are more common in children and elderly adults. Healthy adults typically experience significant pain and discomfort but recover without permanent effects.
